Michael is the Shiraz counterpart to the estate's flagship Cabernet, named for Michael Hermitage and made only in seasons that justify it. Coonawarra is known almost entirely for Cabernet, but Shiraz on the same terra rossa over limestone gives a cooler, more peppery and more structured wine than the warm South Australian regions produce. Dark plum and blackberry with black pepper, mint, dried herb and cedary oak. Full-bodied with firm tannin and the cool-climate acidity that gives these wines their length. A serious argument for the region's second variety.
