Named for the man who planted Coonawarra's first vines in 1891, John Riddoch is the estate's flagship Cabernet and is made only in seasons that justify it — a selection of the best parcels off the narrow strip of terra rossa over limestone that gives the region its name. Deep cassis and dark plum with cedar, graphite, dried herb and the eucalypt lift that runs through Coonawarra Cabernet. Full-bodied with dense but fine-grained tannin, held together by the cool climate's acidity. Austere and closed in youth, and among the most reliably long-lived Cabernets in Australia.
