Rosso del Conte is Sicily's original ambitious red — first made in 1970 from the oldest Nero d'Avola at Regaleali, the Tasca family's high inland estate at Sclafani Bagni, with Perricone adding grip and spice to the blend. Altitude is what makes it work: at around 500 metres the fruit ripens fully but keeps its acidity, so the wine has depth of black cherry and dried plum without turning baked or soupy. Tobacco, carob and dried Mediterranean herbs come with barrel age and time in bottle, and the tannins are firm and dusty. Serious, savoury and a long way from the soft, jammy caricature of southern Italian red.
