Tasting profile
Structure: full-bodied, high tannin, medium acidity, dry
Quinta do Vale Meão sits at the far eastern end of the Douro Superior, and its history is unusual: it was planted by Dona Antónia Ferreira in the 1890s and later supplied the fruit for Barca Velha, before Francisco Olazabal began bottling under the estate's own name in 1999. The wine is built on Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca grown on schist in punishing heat, yet it is not a heavyweight — the register is blackberry and violet with a citrus, bergamot lift, over black pepper, cocoa and a firm slaty mineral core. Tannins are dense and fine-grained, and the wine is closed and serious on release.
