**Tinta Barroca** is a red grape from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, one of the traditional varieties used in Port and Douro red blends, prized for its productivity and deep colour. **In the glass** — it delivers dark, jammy berry fruit and a soft, fleshy texture, with relatively low acidity and gentle tannins that add sweetness and body to a blend rather than structure. **Where it grows** — it is grown chiefly in the Douro and Trás-os-Montes, where it is often planted on cooler, higher or north-facing sites because it can struggle in extreme heat. Small plantings exist in South Africa. It is almost always blended alongside grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. **At the table** — its blended reds suit grilled meats, sausages and rich stews. **Cellaring** — it lends early-drinking generosity, and contributes to Ports built to age over the long term.
