**Touriga Nacional** is a red grape widely regarded as Portugal's finest, native to the Dão and Douro regions and a cornerstone of both Port and premium dry reds. **In the glass** — intensely coloured and aromatic, offering blackberry, violet, bergamot and a floral, almost perfumed lift. It brings firm tannins, good acidity and a full, concentrated body, giving wines real power and grip. **Where it grows** — in the steep, schist terraces of the Douro it is central to fortified Port and increasingly to structured table wines, while the Dão produces a more elegant, aromatic style. Naturally low-yielding, it is now planted in small amounts in Australia, South Africa and elsewhere. **At the table** — excellent with roast game, duck and rich meat dishes. **Cellaring** — its structure and depth make it very age-worthy, with the best dry and fortified wines lasting many years.
