Planeta's flagship red from Noto in Sicily's south-east, the home ground of Nero d'Avola, from vines on white limestone soils close to the sea. It is 100% Nero d'Avola: a long maceration of about five weeks in steel, then around a year in mostly second- and third-use French oak, so the wood frames rather than flavours the wine. Blackberry, dark cherry and plum over liquorice, Mediterranean herbs, cocoa and a warm, faintly balsamic note. Full-bodied with ripe but firm tannin, and considerably more structured than Sicilian reds are often assumed to be; it rewards several years in bottle.
