Les Meysonniers is Chapoutier's organically farmed Crozes-Hermitage and one of the more reliable ways into northern Rhône Syrah. Crozes is the appellation's flat, generous side rather than its steep one, so the wine is approachable where Hermitage is austere — but the varietal signature is all there: blackberry and black olive, a real crack of black pepper, violet perfume and a savoury, almost bacon-like note. Ageing is largely in tank and older wood rather than new barrels, which keeps the fruit clean and the oak invisible. Medium-bodied with fine, firm tannin. Serve slightly cool and it flatters almost anything off a grill.
