Lungarotti effectively invented modern Umbrian wine, and Vigna Monticchio is their monument to it — a single vineyard at Torgiano, Sangiovese with a little Canaiolo, held back for many years in cask and bottle before release. That long wait is the point: the wine arrives with its fruit already turned to dried cherry, leather and tobacco, with dried herbs, undergrowth and a balsamic lift. Tannins are firm and the acidity high, in the classic central-Italian mould. It is one of Italy's great long-agers and among the more underrated bottles in the country.
