**Umbria** ... — a landlocked region in central Italy, tucked beside Tuscany, sometimes called the country's green heart. **Wines & grapes** — Best known for the powerful red Sagrantino di Montefalco, made from the local Sagrantino grape, and for the crisp white Orvieto, based largely on Grechetto and Trebbiano. Sangiovese also features widely. **Character** — Hilly inland vineyards and a warm but continental climate give a mix of structured, deeply coloured reds and fresh, easygoing whites. Sagrantino is notably tannic and long-lived, one of Italy's most robust native reds. **Good to know** — Montefalco Sagrantino was once made mainly as a sweet passito wine, but today the dry version is Umbria's flagship.
