A Rioja Reserva built on Tempranillo. I have not been able to identify the house behind this label with any confidence, so treat what follows as an account of the category rather than of a producer's particular style. Reserva is a legally defined step up from Crianza: at least three years of total ageing, of which a minimum of twelve months in oak and six in bottle, so the wine reaches you already softened and part-evolved. In practice that produces the classic mature Rioja profile — red cherry and dried plum giving way to vanilla and sweet spice from barrel, then leather, tobacco, dried herb and a savoury, faintly balsamic edge as the fruit recedes. Medium-bodied and structured around acidity rather than weight. Serve at 16 to 18°C with lamb, grilled meats or hard sheep's cheese, and give it half an hour open.
