Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut Champagne

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, dry

Meunier almost never gets a solo, and this is Aurélien Laherte's argument that it should. The family estate at Chavot-Courcourt on the southern slopes of Épernay dates to 1889 and now farms around eleven hectares organically and biodynamically, every parcel vinified separately. The wine is assembled from three treatments of the same grape: about 60% pressed straight to white without skin contact, 30% macerated for colour and structure, and 10% as still red wine for aromatic depth — with a substantial share of barrel-aged reserve wine underneath. Fermentation runs across tanks, foudres and barrels with partial malolactic, and the dosage is just 2.5 g/l. The aim is to sit between the prettiness of a blended rosé and the meatier grip of a saignée, and it does. Deep salmon in colour, with wild strawberry, cherry and redcurrant over rose petal, mint, dried herbs and a gently gamey, chalky undertow. Rich and taut at once.

Serving: Serve at 6–8 °C.
