Cigales sits on the Pisuerga north of Valladolid in Castilla y León, historically famous for pale clarete rosados and only in recent decades taken seriously for reds. Tempranillo dominates, here with a little Garnacha. La Legua is one of the denomination's leading estates, and Quinta del Manco is a named parcel within it. The name works on two levels: "el Manco" — the one-armed man — was an old vineyard hand at La Legua remembered by the village, and also evokes Cervantes, known as El Manco de Lepanto after his war wounds, who lived in Valladolid and published Don Quixote there. Expect spiced plum and blueberry with violets, liquorice and a wet-earth savouriness, medium to full-bodied with chalky, slightly chewy tannins and notes of spice and chocolate to close.
