Spätburgunder — Pinot Noir — from the Ahr, and the Ahr is worth knowing about. It is one of Germany's smallest and most northerly wine regions, a narrow steep-sided valley south of Bonn, and almost uniquely for Germany it is planted overwhelmingly to red grapes. Slate and volcanic rock on near-vertical terraces store enough heat to ripen Pinot at a latitude that should not permit it. Jean Stodden is among the estate names that made the region's reputation, and Sonnenberg is one of its best sites. Dark cherry and redcurrant with crushed stone, dried herbs and a smoky, mineral edge, oak present but folded in. Medium-bodied with fine persistent tannin and real grip — the brooding end of German Pinot rather than the delicate one. Structured enough to age properly. Give it a few years.
