Ahr

**Ahr** ... — one of Germany's smallest and most northerly wine regions, following the Ahr river valley south of Bonn, and unusually devoted to red wine. **Wines & grapes** — Chiefly Pinot Noir, known here as Spätburgunder, with some Portugieser and a little white. It is one of the rare German regions where red dominates. **Character** — Steep, slate and volcanic slopes trap warmth in a cool northern setting, producing red wines that are typically elegant, silky and relatively light-bodied, with red-cherry fruit and fine structure. **Good to know** — Despite the northern latitude, the sheltered, sun-catching valley walls make ripe red wine possible, and the Ahr's Pinot Noir has a devoted following.
