Hewitson's flagship Shiraz, and the name is simply the winery's address — 66 Seppeltsfield Road, on the Barossa valley floor. Each vintage the standout parcel from the estate's own dry-grown old vines and its growers is set aside, matured around eighteen months in French oak casks, and finished with a final barrel selection. French rather than American oak is the key choice: less coconut and vanilla sweetness, more graphite and spice. Opaque and deeply perfumed, with plum, blackberry and violet over dark chocolate, aniseed, tobacco and a whisper of smoked meat, then soy, clove and black pepper across a plush palate. Fine supple tannin and a bitter-edged savoury finish keep it from being merely big. Worth a decant.
