Alta Langa is Piedmont's traditional-method sparkling wine and, unusually for Italy, a DOCG that is always vintage-dated and always aged at least thirty months on lees — stricter than Champagne's non-vintage minimum. It comes from the high hills south of Alba, above four hundred and fifty metres, where Chardonnay and Pinot Nero were planted specifically for sparkling wine rather than adapted to it. Enrico Serafino, founded at Canale in 1878, is among the historic houses of the zone. Expect green apple and citrus with white flowers, a fine persistent bead and real bready, hazelnut depth from the long lees ageing. Taut, dry and structured — closer to Champagne in weight than to any Italian sparkling made in tank.
