Schiava

**Schiava** is a red grape from northern Italy, especially the alpine region of Alto Adige, where it is known in German as Vernatsch. It is actually a group of related varieties and has long been the traditional light red of the area. **In the glass** — expect a pale, translucent ruby colour and delicate aromas of strawberry, cherry and sometimes a faint almond or floral note. The palate is light-bodied and gentle, with soft, low tannins and refreshing acidity. **Where it grows** — Alto Adige and the neighbouring Trentino are its heartland, and the same grape is grown across the border in Germany's Württemberg under the name Trollinger, where it yields similarly easygoing reds. **At the table** — versatile and food-friendly, it shines lightly chilled with cured meats, speck and lighter fare. **Cellaring** — best drunk young and fresh, when its bright, delicate fruit is at its peak.
