Cape Pink

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, sweet

De Krans in Calitzdorp, the Klein Karoo town that is South Africa's home of Port-style wines, makes Cape Pink as a non-vintage pink fortified in the manner of a pink Port, from Portuguese varieties led by Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca (the estate planted the district's first Tinta Barocca in 1973). The juice spends only a short time on the skins before fortification, which keeps the colour pale and the tannin low. Strawberry, raspberry and red cherry with a floral, rose-petal lift. Sweet, at around 62 g/l of sugar and 16% alcohol, with enough freshness that the sweetness stays bright rather than heavy. A fruit-driven style made to be drunk young; it also works as a long-drink base.

Serving: Serve at 6–8 °C.

Where it comes from

Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is a red grape widely regarded as Portugal's finest, native to the Dão and Douro regions and a cornerstone of both Port and premium dry reds.

Tinta Barroca

Tinta Barroca is a red grape from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, one of the traditional varieties used in Port and Douro red blends, prized for its productivity and deep colour.

Trincadeira

Trincadeira is a red grape of southern Portugal, closely tied to the warm Alentejo region, where it is a mainstay of the local reds; in the Douro it is often known as Tinta Amarela.

Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a red grape and the backbone of Spanish fine wine, most famously in Rioja and Ribera del Duero, where it produces the country's most age-worthy reds.
