Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, medium acidity, sweet

Rutherglen Muscat is one of the world's great fortified styles and has no real equivalent anywhere. Muscat à Petits Grains Rouge is left on the vine until it raisins in north-east Victoria's fierce late summer, then fortified and aged oxidatively in old wood through decades of heat — the barrels are deliberately kept in hot sheds rather than cool cellars, which drives the concentration. The region operates a four-tier classification: Rutherglen, Classic, Grand and Rare, each requiring a greater average blend age, with Rare demanding at least twenty years. Expect raisin, toffee, orange peel and cold tea, viscous and intensely sweet, cut by a spirit lift that stops it cloying. Effectively indestructible: an opened bottle keeps for months. Pour it in very small glasses.
