CPR stands for the three varieties in it — Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling — all grown on Borthwick's home vineyard at Gladstone in the Wairarapa, on stony free-draining alluvial soils by the Ruamāhanga River. Pinot Gris usually leads the blend, with Riesling supplying florals and lime zest and Chardonnay the weight through the middle. Given a little skin contact and several months on lees, so the texture is creamy and lightly grippy rather than simply crisp: pear skin, soft peach and baked apple over a taut line of lemon-pith acidity, finishing dry and faintly saline. Each variety does a distinct job and the wine is quietly serious for its price.
