Pinot Gris

**Pinot Gris** is a white grape and a greyish-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, historically at home in Alsace and known around the world as Pinot Grigio in Italy and Grauburgunder in German-speaking countries. **In the glass** — its style splits sharply by region: rich, spicy and full-bodied with pear, quince and smoky notes in Alsace, versus lighter, crisper and more citrus-driven when made as Italian Pinot Grigio. **Where it grows** — Alsace produces its most opulent, sometimes off-dry versions, while northern Italy turns out vast quantities of the leaner Pinot Grigio style. It also thrives in Germany, Austria, Oregon, New Zealand and Australia, where producers choose which end of the spectrum to chase. **At the table** — the crisp style suits antipasti and shellfish; the richer Alsace style stands up to smoked fish, pork and charcuterie. **Cellaring** — most is best young, but concentrated Alsace bottlings can age gracefully for several years.
