Wairarapa

**Wairarapa** is a small but respected wine region at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island, centred on the town of Martinborough. **Wines & grapes** — It built its name on Pinot Noir, producing structured, savoury reds, and also makes fine aromatic whites such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling. Production is boutique in scale. **Character** — A cool, dry climate with free-draining river-terrace soils and marked day-night temperature swings gives wines of concentration, firm structure and vibrant acidity. The Pinot Noir often shows dark cherry, spice and earthy depth. **Good to know** — Despite tiny volumes, Wairarapa (and Martinborough in particular) sits among New Zealand's most highly regarded Pinot Noir zones.
