Alpha Zeta's Amarone comes from growers in the Valpantena valley, east of Verona, working with New Zealand winemaker Matt Thomson. Hand-picked Corvina-led bunches are dried for several months before pressing, the classic appassimento that concentrates sugar and flavour, and the wine is fermented fully dry. Expect a generous, ripe Amarone of dried cherry, plum and raisin with dark chocolate, tobacco and sweet spice, supple rather than austere tannins and warm alcohol. It is built for richness and early pleasure more than for very long ageing, and suits slow-cooked meat and hard aged cheese.
