**Savoie** is an alpine wine region in eastern France, tucked among the mountains and lakes near the Swiss and Italian borders, famous for crisp, high-altitude whites. **Wines & grapes** — Whites dominate, chiefly from Jacquère, along with Altesse (also called Roussette), Roussanne (known locally as Bergeron in Chignin) and Chasselas. Reds and rosés come mainly from Mondeuse, Gamay and Pinot Noir. **Character** — A cool mountain climate and stony, often limestone slopes give light-bodied, bright, refreshing wines with lively acidity and an almost saline, mineral snap. Most are meant to be drunk young. **Good to know** — Savoie wines pair naturally with alpine cheese dishes like fondue and raclette, and much of the output is enjoyed in the region's ski resorts.
