Languedoc

**Languedoc** is a vast wine region sweeping along France's Mediterranean coast in the south, from the Rhône delta toward the Spanish border. Once famous mainly for volume, it is now a dynamic source of characterful, well-priced wine. **Wines & grapes** — Reds lead, built on Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan, with appellations such as Corbières, Minervois, Faugères and Pic Saint-Loup. It also makes rosé, herby whites, and distinctive sparkling and fortified sweet wines. **Character** — A hot, dry, sunny climate and garrigue-scented hills give reds that are warm, spicy and full of dark fruit, often with a wild Mediterranean herbal edge. **Good to know** — Much wine here is sold under the broad Pays d'Oc label, which allows single-varietal bottlings.
