Auvergne

**Auvergne** is a wine area in the volcanic heart of central France, in the Massif Central along the upper reaches of the Allier, producing wines under the Côtes d'Auvergne name. **Wines & grapes** — Gamay dominates the light, juicy reds and rosés, with Pinot Noir also planted, while Chardonnay accounts for the whites. **Character** — Volcanic and granitic soils, combined with a cool, hilly climate, give reds that are fresh, bright and relatively light-bodied, with vivid red fruit and a mineral edge. The wines are honest, drinkable and closer in spirit to Beaujolais and the Loire than to richer southern styles.
