Tannat

**Tannat** is a red grape from south-west France, historically at home in Madiran, and today just as famous as the signature red of Uruguay. As its name hints, it is one of the most tannic varieties in the wine world. **In the glass** — Deeply coloured and full-bodied, it shows blackberry, plum, liquorice and smoky, earthy notes, framed by firm acidity and a formidable grip of tannin that softens with time or careful winemaking. **Where it grows** — In Madiran and the wider Gascony region it makes dense, structured reds, while in Uruguay it produces a slightly rounder, more approachable style that has become a national calling card. It is also grown in Argentina, Brazil and parts of the USA. **At the table** — A natural match for hearty meat dishes such as cassoulet, lamb or grilled steak. **Cellaring** — Its tannin and structure reward patience; good examples age well over many years, mellowing and gaining complexity.
