Muscat of Alexandria

**Muscat of Alexandria** is an ancient white grape from the eastern Mediterranean, one of the oldest cultivated varieties and a member of the wide-ranging Muscat family. It is known as Zibibbo in Sicily and, when fortified in Portugal, as Moscatel de Setúbal. **In the glass** — Intensely aromatic, it bursts with orange blossom, honey, grape and candied-citrus scents. Depending on style it ranges from dry and floral to lusciously sweet, generally with modest acidity and a rich, grapey palate. **Where it grows** — It thrives in warm climates around the Mediterranean and beyond — Greece, Italy (especially Pantelleria), Spain, Portugal, North Africa and Australia — making everything from dry table wines to raisined dessert and fortified wines. **At the table** — Sweet versions shine with fruit tarts, blue cheese or on their own as dessert. **Cellaring** — Dry styles are best young, while concentrated sweet and fortified wines can age gracefully for decades.
