Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, dry

Zibibbo is the Sicilian name for Muscat of Alexandria, brought to the island by the Phoenicians and cultivated in Egypt for some five thousand years. It is made in radically different ways — as the sweet passito of Pantelleria, as a table grape, and as here, bone dry. Luna Gaia is a partnership between the Abruzzese co-operative Cantina Orsogna and BioGaia, a collective of Sicilian biodynamic growers; the wine is Demeter-certified, hand-harvested, fermented with ambient yeasts and rested four months on lees. Expect white blossom, honeysuckle and Mediterranean herbs on the nose, then ripe peach, candied orange peel and a hint of mango, with a saline note and crisp acidity holding the fruit intensity in check. Aromatic but dry — the perfume promises sweetness the palate does not give.
