Chenin Blanc

**Chenin Blanc** is a versatile white grape from France's Loire Valley, capable of everything from bone-dry to lusciously sweet and sparkling, all underpinned by vibrant acidity. **In the glass** — expect quince, yellow apple, honey and a distinctive lanolin or wet-wool note, often with a chalky mineral streak. Its hallmark is racy, mouthwatering acidity, which balances styles ranging from crisp and dry to richly honeyed dessert wines. **Where it grows** — in the Loire it shines in Vouvray, Savennières and Anjou, where botrytis can produce sublime sweet wines. South Africa grows more Chenin than anywhere, historically called Steen, making everything from easy dry whites to serious barrel-aged bottlings; it is also found in California. **At the table** — dry styles pair with roast chicken and creamy sauces; sweet versions with fruit tarts or blue cheese. **Cellaring** — its acidity gives remarkable longevity; the finest dry and sweet Loire wines can age for decades.
