Austria

**Austria** is a benchmark cool-climate country producing precise, food-friendly wines with a strong dry-white identity and a serious quality reputation rebuilt over recent decades. Production is modest in scale but consistently high in standard. **Signature wines** — Grüner Veltliner, the peppery, versatile white that is the national signature, and racy Rieslings lead the way; among reds, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt give firm, spicy, distinctly central-European styles. Sweet wines from Burgenland are also renowned. **Key regions** — the Wachau, Kremstal, and Kamptal along the Danube for top whites; Burgenland near the Hungarian border for reds and lusciously sweet wines; and Styria (Steiermark) in the south for aromatic whites. **Good to know** — Austria overhauled its wine law after a 1980s adulteration scandal, emerging with some of Europe's strictest standards. The Wachau uses its own tiered ripeness categories (Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd), and much of the country's identity rests on dry, transparent, terroir-driven whites.
