**Argentina** is South America's largest wine producer and one of the New World's most recognizable, defined by high-altitude vineyards climbing toward the Andes and a signature red that became its calling card. Once inward-looking, it now exports its style with confidence. **Signature wines** — bold, plush Malbec is the flagship, giving deeply colored reds with ripe dark fruit; the aromatic white Torrontés is the distinctive native counterpart, alongside solid Cabernet Sauvignon and Bonarda. **Key regions** — Mendoza dominates production and includes prized sub-zones like the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo; further north Salta grows vines at some of the world's highest elevations, while Patagonia in the south offers a cooler, fresher profile. **Good to know** — Argentine wine country is essentially high desert, irrigated by Andean snowmelt, and altitude does much of the work that latitude does elsewhere, keeping acidity and color intense under strong sunlight.
