Morstein is one of Germany's great dry Riesling sites, a steep limestone-and-clay hillside above Westhofen in Rheinhessen, and Wittmann's bottling is among the wines that changed how the region is regarded — Rheinhessen was for decades associated with bulk Liebfraumilch, and estates like this rebuilt its reputation from the ground up. Grosses Gewächs means dry, from a classified single vineyard, and always fully fermented out. Lemon zest and white peach with quince, chamomile, a white-pepper spice and a firm stony, saline depth. Full-bodied by Riesling standards, with piercing acidity and real tension rather than weight. Closed and austere young — this genuinely needs five years and rewards fifteen or more. Serve cool rather than cold, in a proper wine glass.
