Tardieu-Laurent buy fruit rather than farm it, and their whole argument is old vines: this Crozes-Hermitage comes from parcels of mature Syrah and is raised in a high proportion of oak, giving a darker, denser wine than the appellation's usual easygoing style. Blackberry and black olive over the peppery, bacon-fat savour that marks northern Rhône Syrah, with violets on top and liquorice on the finish. Full-bodied and polished, with ripe rather than aggressive tannin — a Crozes that behaves like a small Hermitage.
