Viognier

Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, medium acidity, dry

Viognier is a northern Rhône variety and a demanding one — picked too early it tastes of nothing, picked too late it turns oily and flat, and the window between is narrow. Napa Valley's warmth gives it generosity and weight. Dried apricot and white peach with honeysuckle, orange blossom, ginger and a faintly oily texture across the palate. Full-bodied and dry, with moderate acidity carrying an intensely aromatic nose. A wine that smells sweeter than it tastes, and best drunk while that perfume is at full volume.

Where it comes from

Napa Valley, United States

Napa Valley is a compact, sun-warmed valley in northern California, an hour or so above San Francisco, and it is the name that turned American wine into a serious global player.

Viognier

Viognier is a white grape from the northern Rhône Valley in France, long the signature of the tiny appellation Condrieu and a variety that came close to disappearing before a revival spread it far beyond its Rhône home.
