Petite Sirah from Napa Valley — a variety that is neither petite nor Syrah, but Durif, a nineteenth-century French crossing of Syrah with Peloursin that found its home in California. Almost black in the glass, with blackberry, blueberry and dark plum over black pepper, cocoa and dried herb. Full-bodied with formidable, teeth-staining tannin and real density. Rarely bottled varietally at this level, and it wants years, a decanter and something substantial to eat.
