Chalk Hill sits in the north-east corner of the Russian River Valley, high enough above the fog line to get warmer days than the valley floor while the volcanic-ash soils give the wines a distinct minerality. Chardonnay here comes out ripe but structured: baked apple and ripe pear over lemon curd, toasted hazelnut and vanilla from barrel fermentation, full-bodied with a creamy texture from malolactic and lees work. Generous in the Californian manner but with the acidity to carry it.
