A dry red from the Douro, the terraced schist valley that spent three centuries making only Port and now produces some of Portugal's finest table wines from the same grapes. Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca with Tinta Roriz — which is the Douro's name for Tempranillo, and the name every Portuguese label uses. The schist is the point: it holds heat and forces roots deep, and the wines carry a dark, mineral, graphite-like signature because of it. Dense blackberry and dark plum with violet, black pepper, dried herb and a firm stony finish. Full-bodied with substantial fine-grained tannin and real freshness underneath despite the heat of the valley floor. Serious and structured rather than plush. Decant it, and give it years.
