Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, high tannin, medium acidity, dry

Dona Clara takes its name from the main house at Quinta da Romaneira, the large estate above the Douro near Pinhão, and it is drawn from parcels across the whole property. The backbone is the traditional Douro set — Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cão — with small lots of Syrah and Petit Verdot added for depth. Expect dark plum and violet over the schist minerality that marks serious Douro table wine, with black pepper, wild hillside herbs and a dark-chocolate edge from oak. Full-bodied and firmly structured, but the tannins are polished rather than rugged, and there is enough acidity to keep it fresh.
