Porseleinberg is a single farm on the Kasteelberg in the Swartland, and Callie Louw farms its decomposed-schist slopes dry, with no irrigation and very low yields — the labels are still letterpressed by hand on the estate. The Syrah that results is one of the most distinctive in the southern hemisphere: dark and concentrated but taut rather than sweet, with blackberry and black olive over an insistent crushed-stone minerality, white pepper from whole-bunch fermentation, and the scrubby fynbos note of the region. Raised largely in concrete and old foudre so the fruit is unmasked. Tannins are firm and dry, the acidity high, and the wine is austere and closed in youth.
