Hughes & Hughes is the experimental label of brothers Jonny and Matt Hughes of Mewstone, and this is one of Australia's very few Dornfelders, from a single vineyard at White Rock in Tasmania's north-west. Whole berries are wild-fermented, then the wine spends six months in seasoned oak and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Blackberry, anise and pepper with savoury, meaty notes, dusty mouth-filling tannin and precise acidity give it a structured yet surprisingly elegant feel.
