Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry

Pinot Noir is the only red grape permitted in Alsace, and for most of the last century it produced pale, thin wines; warmer seasons and lower yields have changed that, and the serious named-site bottlings from houses like Cattin — here from the Steinbach lieu-dit — are proper reds. Expect red cherry and wild strawberry rather than dark fruit, a savoury forest-floor and dried-rose register that builds with age, and the sweet spice and faint smoke of barrel ageing. Medium-bodied with moderate tannin and enough acidity to keep it fresh at the table. Serve it cool, 14-15°C, and treat it as you would a village Burgundy: it flatters roast poultry, charcuterie and mushrooms rather than heavy meat.
