Tasting profile

Structure: light-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, dry

Le Martray is the earliest-drinking red of Grange Saint-Sauveur, the biodynamic Loire domaine of Alice Gitton-Pouponneau and Antoine Pouponneau, bottled as Vin de France. A blend led by Grolleau Noir and Gamay with Pineau d'Aunis (Grolleau Gris has played a part in some vintages), it is given a short partial carbonic maceration and eight months in demi-muids. Light, juicy and crunchy: redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry with a peppery Pineau d'Aunis lift, a stony edge, barely-there tannins and bright acidity. A glouglou red for drinking young and slightly cool.

Serving: Serve at 12–14 °C.

Where it comes from

Loire Valley, France

Loire Valley stretches along France's longest river, running west from the centre of the country toward the Atlantic coast, and is prized above all for elegant, food-friendly whites.

Grolleau

Grolleau is a red grape from France's Loire Valley, traditionally valued for its productivity and its role in the region's rosés rather than for making bold, structured reds.

Gamay

Gamay is a red grape best known as the sole variety of Beaujolais in eastern France, a cheerful, juicy wine that ranges from simple and fruity to surprisingly serious.

Pineau d'Aunis

An old, peppery, light-coloured red Loire grape used in Touraine and Vin de France reds and rosés, and in Coteaux du Loir; known for bright acidity and white-pepper spice.
