Garage Wine Co. began exactly as the name suggests — Derek Mossman Knapp, a Canadian, and his wife Pilar Miranda working out of his garage with eight barrels, later joined by the viticulture professor Alvaro Peña. Mossman founded MOVI, Chile's association of independent vintners, and the house now makes around 42,000 bottles a year from seven vineyards worked with small growers. Reelegido — "chosen again" — is a single parcel of sixty-five-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon at Isla de Maipo. Native yeasts, no additions of any kind, hand punch-downs, basket pressing, very little new wood and low sulphur, then two winters in barrel, none newer than three years old: local wisdom holds that two winters makes the best wine. Blackcurrant and candied plum on a ripe, sun-warmed nose with a spicy, balsamic edge; dry and taut on the palate, with finely grained tannins and a juicy flow. Bottled in salvaged recycled glass, so bottle shapes vary. Every lot carries its own number.
