Palmer's "hermitagé" — a revival of the 19th-century habit of blending a little northern Rhône Syrah into claret, a practice English merchants prized and AOC regulation later outlawed. Roughly 85% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Palmer's Margaux plots, with around 10-15% Syrah whose source the estate keeps secret. The result reads as Margaux with an accent: cassis and dark plum with Margaux's violet perfume and fine tannin, but carrying a peppery lift, a denser colour and a truffled, underbrush note the Syrah brings. Full-bodied, velvety in texture, with high acidity and firm, finely grained tannin. Around five thousand bottles a release.
