Syrah from the Valais, the sun-trap Alpine valley that is Switzerland's warmest wine region and the only place north of the Rhône where the variety has a real history. Altitude keeps it taut: dark cherry and blackberry with cracked black pepper, violet and a smoky, stony edge, medium-bodied with fine tannin and vivid acidity. Closer to a Northern Rhône Syrah than to anything from a warm New World district, and it rewards a few years in bottle.
