Tasting profile
Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, high acidity, dry
César Márquez, Raúl Pérez's nephew, has made his own wines in Valtuille since 2015. El Rapolao is a single-vineyard Bierzo from a plot of vines over a hundred years old, mostly Mencía with other local varieties, aged about twelve months in 500-litre French oak barrels, at a moderate alcohol. Critics describe it as a refined take on the vineyard's wilder side: red cherry and blackberry with earth, pepper, wild herbs and violet, on fine, energetic tannins. It ages well for a decade or more.
