Caymus is famous for Cabernet, but the Wagner family have grown Zinfandel in Napa for generations and this bottling reflects that long familiarity with the variety. Zinfandel ripens unevenly — a single bunch can hold raisins and green berries at once — which is why it tends toward high alcohol and jammy generosity in warm sites. Expect brambly blackberry and raspberry preserve, black pepper, sweet baking spice and a briary, slightly rustic edge, with soft tannins and plush texture. Immediately likeable and built for enjoyment rather than contemplation; it does not have Cabernet's structure and was never meant to.
