Prestige Cuvée Fumée Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, dry

Calvet is one of Bordeaux's old négociant houses, founded in 1818, and this is its barrel-influenced white — "fumée" being the traditional French shorthand for the smoky, flinty note that oak and lees give a Sauvignon Blanc, as in Pouilly-Fumé, rather than anything to do with smoke itself. Expect the grape's grapefruit, gooseberry and boxwood character rounded out by a toasted, faintly nutty edge, with medium body and firm acidity underneath. Dry Bordeaux blanc of this kind is a food white: less piercing than a Loire Sauvignon, less tropical than a New Zealand one. Serve at 10-11°C and drink it young, while the fruit and the oak are still in balance.
